Christmas Gift Guide for Your Dog

I know I can’t be the only one who buys presents for my dog at Christmas. It’s fun to include them in the gift giving, even if they have no idea what’s going on. Of course our furry friends need a new toy or comfy bed at Christmas!

This year’s gift guide, just like last year, is broken into three groups based on what type of dog you might have. Whether he’s a Playful Pup, a Pampered Pooch or a Fashionable Fido, there’s something on the list for most any type of dog personality. 10 Indoor Dog Activities

As a dog owner you have to get pretty creative during the winter months to keep your dog entertained. Although my dog wouldn’t mind being outside for hours at a time whether it’s four degrees or four feet of snow, I really don’t want to be. Over the last few years I’ve tried a lot of different activities to keep my dog entertained on the days we’re stuck inside.

Here are 10 ideas for things to do when your stuck inside:

1. Food Dispensing Toys – Also known as “Enrichment Feeders,” these toys are a great way to provide some activity for your dog without giving him a lot of treats. I use a few different ones for Hunter and Roscoe and put their breakfast and dinner in there. Hunter has an Omega Ball, Kongs and a Kibble Nibble Meal Dispensing Dog Toy, and both Hunter and Roscoe have a Busy Buddy Twist and Treat. I like to switch them up to keep him challenged.

2. Agility – The fun thing about agility is that you can do many of the activities at home. An easy agility activity to try at home is to put a stick up on cans and have your dog jump over it. You’ll want to start with the stick very low and slowly raise it as your dog gets more comfortable. 3. Shaping – Shaping is a great mental activity for your dog. In this activity, you break down a behavior into tiny increments, reinforcing the behavior at each step until you’ve achieved the full behavior. 4. Hide and Seek – Just like regular hide and seek, this game involves having your dog find you or other family members, as you hide in another room. You can bring treats or just try to get your dog to find you in a different room without a reward.

5. Run the stairs – I often wish that I had stairs because I would definitely take advantage of them to wear out Hunter. You can add in a game of fetch or just have your dog chase you up and down the steps.

7. Name Game – A new game we’ve added into our trick time is learning the names of toys. It is amazing how many words a dog can learn. We’ve been working on identifying toys, and so far he has learned ball. If you get really into this, you can teach your dog to fetch you things, like a beer from the fridge, perhaps. Life goals.

8. Tricks – I work on trick training with Hunter for at least 10 minutes pretty much every day. I’ve taught him roll over and bow in recent months. He picked up roll over very fast, but take a bow has proven to be more difficult. We are still working on perfecting that one and will soon add in another trick. 9. Grooming – If your dog is anything like mine, your grooming session will also involve a workout since you’ll have to chase him down once you pull out the brush. Grooming is a great way to work on teaching your dog calm behavior, and it’s also a great way to bond with your dog and give him some affection.

10. Photo shoot – Of course I would suggest this, I love taking photos of my dogs. If your dog likes to dress up, or if you’ve taught him to balance things on his nose in one of your shaping sessions, for example, you can set up a variety of fun photo opportunities. I know from my marathon photo session with Hunter and Roscoe around Christmas they were pretty worn out from all of the modeling.

Of course I realize my dog doesn’t know it’s Christmas and won’t notice if I don’t get him a gift, but I’m still going to get him something. He is family isn’t he?

Stuck inside again! Here’s what we’ve been doing.

I think I’ve made it clear that the winter and I are not friends. I’m pretty much over the snow and cold at this point and have begun contemplating my move somewhere warm. I think Dogs in Maui has a nice ring to it, don’t you? Until I can make my Hawaii move though, I’m stuck here in the cold with a dog that is tired of being inside. It’s pretty clear my dog does not enjoy all this inside time, but when there’s barricades of snow at every driveway it’s kind of hard to even take a walk. I’ve had to become very creative in my indoor activities, as well as try out some news toys to keep Hunter from keeping me up every night with all of his energy.

Here are some of my favorite dog toys for when you’re stuck inside:

PetSafe Busy Buddy Twist ‘n Treat Dog Toy
As I’ve mentioned before, my dog is an aggressive chewer. I pretty much can’t buy him any sort of toy that in any way could be eaten – plush, stuffed or anything that has a rope or could be too easily chewed up. For this reason, I love this Busy Buddy line of toys. My dog enjoys this twist’n treat one. I try and put some bigger treat pieces in it to make it a little harder for him. It seemed to take him longer when I first got this toy, so I think eventually they either figure it out or it loosens up, but it’s still a fun toy that I know he can’t eat so I like it either way.

This one is really my favorite, because it gets my dog moving around and using his brain. The only downfall to this one is that I had to remove the rope at the end since he started eating it. I left part of it inside to keep something blocking the opening of the jug, and it seems to be enough to block the treats from coming out too easily. Hunter is a big fan of this toy. I think this is a good one for any active, energetic dog. And it’s even better when you can keep the rope on the end. One recommendation: don’t let your dog play with this near any tables or couches. I think I ended up getting more of a work out than my dog from all the times I had to move furniture to retrieve the jug after it rolled under something.

Peanut Butter Bones

When I know that I want to keep Hunter busy for a while, I get him one of these bones. He absolutely loves these things. The larger size will keep him busy for hours. It is a life saver when you are tired and want to keep your dog entertained.

My dog also enjoys Kong toys and Nylabones, both great toys for aggressive chewers.
