Now that warmer weather is upon us, it’s time to get your dog ready for all of the upcoming dog friendly races and walks! I have accepted that Hunter will never be a runner (which works out since it gives me an excuse to not run), but we do enjoy a dog walk from time to time. Lucky for us, there are a lot of great dog walks and 5Ks that include dog walks, in the next few months.

April 25: Paws for a Cause
The first annual Paws for a Cause on April 25 will raise funds for the American Liver Foundation and will feature a walk, vendor exhibits, demonstrations, raffles, food trucks and more. Find out more info here: http://go.liverfoundation.org/site/TR?fr_id=4450&pg=entry
April 26: Love A Stray Fur Fun 5k, Avon Lake
This annual 5K race and dog walk benefits Love-A-Stray, an all volunteer rescue group in Avon. The race will take place at Avon Lake High School and pre-registration is recommended at http://www.hermescleveland.com/roadracing/events/loveastray.asp
May 2: New Leash on Life Dog Walk, Edgewater
This is a dog walk only (no 5k) to benefit The Northeast Ohio SPCA Pet Shelter. There will also be prizes, contests, 50/50 and raffles for local gift certificates and gift bags. For more info, visit: http://www.northeastohiospca.org/events.html
May 30: Freedom 5K Run and 1 Mile Mutt Strut
The race/walk will be held at Sunny Lake Park in Aurora to benefit the Freedom Greyhound Rescue of Ohio. The race will be almost two laps on the paved, 1.75 mile loop around the lake. The fun continues the next day, on the 31st, at the Freedom Dog Fest and Adoption Fair held at Trails & Tails Dog Park. For more info, visit: http://www.freedomgreyhoundrescue.org/run.html
May 31: The 5th Annual Greyt Race
This 5K race and 1 mile dog walk takes place at Coe Lake in Berea. Funds from the race go to Greyhound Adoption of Ohio. Top male and female winners will receive a prize. Register for the race or walk at http://www.hermescleveland.com/roadracing/events/greytrace.asp
July 5: Muddy Paws, Peninsula
Bring your dog to run or walk in the scenic Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The trail race is 5 or 10 miles, with a 2 mile course for you and your dog. July 18: Dirty Dog Run and Dog Wash, Avon Lake

Aug. 22: Mutt Strut
This annual dog walk benefits the Lake Humane Society. Held at the Penitentiary Glen, the event will also include dog games and contests, raffles, an agility course and rally training course and “Project Ruffway” a runway show of adoptable dogs. Aug. 23: Fourth Annual Tails for Trails Dog Walk
West Creek Conservancy’s Fourth Annual “Tails for Trails” Dog Walk at West Creek Reservation in Parma will help raise funds for new parks and trails. Exact location has yet to be determined. Keep an eye on http://westcreek.org/event/fourth-annual-tails-for-trails-dog-walk/ for more details.
Side note: Most of the races hosted by Hermes are dog friendly, these are just all of the events that benefit dogs specifically.
